Improve Onboarding experience for new products

Summary

I wrote some 5-star rated assets for Unity3D; some now 10+ years old, but they’ve become very complex and powerful - I need to simplify / speed-up the onboarding process for new users.

Usefulness: Practical/Productive

Techniques

  • I do not have the time/team/budget to follow the rich processes I normally do when running Product in a tech company; instead I have about 30 minutes end-to-end to spend on this.
  • Re-using ideas from the “world-expert Marketing Consultant” experiment (see previous)…
  • Re-using ideas from the “do Customer Development faster, leaner” experiment (see previous)…
  • … get ChatGPT to hallucinate for me that it’s one of my target users about to go through onboarding, and ask what they would expect to see in terms of process + docs.

Discoveries

  • Current iteration is better-than-good. PUBLIC prompt (private version): prompt: improve onboarding process documents and userguides (PUBLIC)
  • In particular: hallucination made me realise something I should have included in original docs/onboarding. It’s just a basic piece of “if someone starts using this, their second question is likely to be ‘how do I X’”. It’s so basic I’d forgotten that everyone goes through it (normally people don’t even ask, they just click until they find it – but it’s a great thing to call-out explicitly in onboarding docs)
  • Gave me an idea for a new feature that would help approx 10% with onboarding, possibly more (one of the hallucinated questions implies a feature that doesn’t exist – but actually: probably should!)
